Trending Honeymoon Destinations 2020

Top 8 Destinations

Choosing a honeymoon destination can be a tough decision, there are so many incredible places to see around the world, which one do you choose?

To help you decide I have asked the lovely Penny from Suitcase Travel to talk you through the top trending honeymoon destinations for 2020. Here she will take you through 8 of the top destinations across the globe, explaining what these destinations have to offer and giving her professional advice on when to go and what to do.

1. Canada

I have seen a real growing interest in people not wanting to have a beach included in their honeymoon but to go somewhere totally different where lots of exploring can be done. Canada is perfect and in particular the west coast. You can hire a car and travel through various towns and cities or even hire a campervan to travel around in. Another alternative is to do it with a small group of people with a guide leading you around. A great time to go here is also our summer months otherwise it is too icy and snowy making it perfect if you want to travel straight after your summer wedding.

The west coast of Canada is host to the breath-taking Rocky Mountains. Travelling through these natural masterpieces gives you views like nowhere else in the world. A visit to the infamous Lake Louise is a must! The turquoise waters are like nothing else. You can then end or start your trip in Vancouver. Here is a bustling city with a thriving arts and musical scene plus some super tasty restaurants to try. If you want to add something extra special onto this trip, a visit to Las Vegas in the USA is easily done and I would highly recommend going here if it appeals to you at all. The city never sleeps and there is literally something happening on every street corner.

2. St. Lucia

The Caribbean islands are a great place to go for your honeymoon. They have the warm weather, the stunning beaches, the little romantic hotels for you to enjoy plus some of the friendliest people who will go out of their way to make sure you have the best time. The ideal time to visit here is between December and April but May and June often have still great weather and great prices. You only really want to avid August and September when it is Hurricane season.

St. Lucia is an appealing island to many as it is so picturesque with the Pitons in the background meaning there is plenty to do other than relaxing by the pool and beach. The island has its very own rain forest so a trek into here is a real must with a guide to help you find out new things and spot some really cool wildlife. A visit to both Rodney Bay and Marigot Bay are really worthwhile as they are great for restaurants and a little retail therapy.

3. Kenya

Safari is still a popular choice to do whilst on your honeymoon and South Africa has been a popular choice in recent years. However, I have noticed recently a few more people looking into going to Kenya. I would highly recommend this country for those that want minimal travelling and want to enjoy both the safari experience followed by the beach as Kenya has some really nice beaches as well as their famous safaris.

The Masai Mara is one of the most famous areas in Kenya to go for a safari. The most popular time is during the Great Migration as you can see The Big 5 en masse if you are lucky and can give you some striking photos. Nevertheless, there are some other places in Kenya that also provide a great safari experience without such a big price tag.

4.Mauritius

The island of Mauritius ticks so many boxes that suits both the bride and groom it is no wonder why it is one of our most popular destinations for honeymoons. It allows you to relax by the beach and pool as well as to go out and discover more of this exotic island without it being too full on. I like to recommend a visit to the rum distillery as Mauritius loves its rum and is a big producer of this spirit. It is a really fun activity. For a really romantic activity, a sunset Catamaran cruise around the island is ideal. For getting close to wildlife, a visit to La Vanille Nature Reserve to feed the Giant Tortoises is amazing as well as visiting Casela Nature Park.

For those that like to do their own thing more, hiring a car for a few days is a great option. Mauritius drives on the same side of the road as in the UK making it really easy to drive around. It is a great way to go off the beaten track a little in a totally safe manner. You can do as much or as little as you want – perfect for a honeymoon after your wedding.

5. Santorini, Greece

The Greek islands are growing in popularity at the moment as they can be a haven m=for the perfect honeymoon. There are hundreds of islands to choose from with various different types of accommodation from all-inclusive hotels, boutique hotels full of romantic touches to truly lovely apartments and villas that is all yours to enjoy. A jewel in the Greek Islands crown is the beautiful island of Santorini. It is a beauty where you will not be able to stop taking photos plus it comes with some of the best hotels around where you can even have your own private pool.

Another trend I have been seeing with the Greek islands is to do island hopping as every island has its own unique characteristics.  If you want to link some islands with Santorini, the quaint island of Naxos and Mykonos with its chic bars and restaurants are the best combination.

6. Sardinia

For gorgeous sandy beaches and crystal clear waters just like you get in the Caribbean but without the long flight, Sardinia is a must! When visiting here, you will feel like you are in somewhere much further afield but you do not have the jet lag to go with it. If you like history, you will love this island too. It is also a great option for those wanting to go away in the summer months as it has the best weather between May and September.

For beach perfection you need to head to Spiagga della Pelosa. Porto Cervo is a place to visit for chic and boutique restaurants and shops and for the ultimate people watching looking at how the other half live in their motor yachts. A top tip is to head to the archipelago Isla Maddalena where you will see the famous pink sands, just like in the Caribbean.

7. Thailand

Thailand is a country that has it all! Bustling cities, lovely beaches, luxury hotels, the chance to get up close with Elephants and the many temples throughout the whole country.  It is also a place that still offers exceptional value for money. If you have children and want to enjoy your honeymoon with them, Thailand is a great option for families. Most of my honeymoon couples like to discover the country and visit a few different places before unwinding by the beach at the end. They also tend to upgrade the hotel and room for the last part as it is surprisingly quite cheap to do so in Thailand.

A highlight in Thailand for many people is a visit to Elephant Hills. It is an elephant sanctuary in the heart of Khao Sok National Park. You can feed and wash the elephants knowing that they are being treated well and you are staying in the heart of the jungle but with a touch of luxury. The tents are ‘glamping’ at their very best and you can even stay a night on the lake in the same style ‘glamping’ tents that are over the water. This gives you unlimited canoeing opportunities in the tranquil waters.

8. Florida

I have noticed that the theme of wanting to do more than just relax on a beach is getting stronger each year. Our brides and grooms want to see more of the place they are visiting in order to create those special memories that will last a lifetime. As a result, I have seen a rise in honeymoons to Florida in the USA. It also makes a great honeymoon if you are planning to bring your children along too.

Visiting Florida you obviously have both Disney World and Universal Studios if you like your adrenaline. After a week or so here, you can then head to the beach to somewhere like Clearwater for some relaxation. If you want to do more exploring, instead of just the beach, you can hop into a car and drive around the area visiting so many places and ending in Miami. A highlight of the drive would have to be the Florida Everglades – one of the most scenic drives you will ever experience.

Wow what an incredible selection! Which one would you choose?

If you have been inspired to go out and book your dream honeymoon then I highly recommend a visit to Suitcase Travel who put this great blog together for me. They are an award winning independent travel agent based in Dunstable.
